Indtil videre tyder beviser p\u00e5, at antallet af Covid-19 tilf\u00e6lde og d\u00f8dsfald i Australien har v\u00e6ret\n\n lavere end i mange andre lande\n<\/a>\n, selvom udbruddet endnu ikke kan anses for at v\u00e6re under kontrol.<\/p>\n

Australske hospitaler ser ogs\u00e5 ud til at have klaret tilstr\u00f8mningen af Covid-19-patienter relativt godt, og en potentiel \u00e5rsag til dette er, at der var en rimelig m\u00e6ngde ekstra kapacitet til at starte med. Naturligvis har foranstaltninger truffet af regeringen og individuelle stater og hospitaler ogs\u00e5 haft en indvirkning, herunder annullering af elektiv kirurgi og brugen af fleksibel modul\u00e6r infrastruktur, der kan g\u00f8res operationel meget hurtigt.<\/p>\n

Selvom det er for tidligt at spekulere i udfaldet, er det interessant at se p\u00e5, hvordan Australiens intensivafdelingskapacitet er sammenlignet med andre landes. Officielle tal viser, at der er 191 intensivafdelinger i Australien, med i alt 2.378 ledige intensivsenge under baseline aktivitet \u2013 hvilket svarer til omkring 9,4 intensivafdelinger pr. 100.000 indbyggere. Tallene er indsamlet f\u00f8r krisen og inkluderer derfor ikke tilf\u00f8jede senge p\u00e5 hospitaler eller midlertidige afdelinger eller s\u00e5kaldte 'felthospitaler' siden.<\/p>\n

An\n\n international sammenligning\n<\/a>\nindikerer, at Australien har flere intensive senge pr. befolkning end mange lande, herunder Storbritannien, som har omkring 6,6 senge pr. 100.000 mennesker, Japan (7,3) og Kina (3,6), men betydeligt f\u00e6rre end USA (34,7) og nogle andre store europ\u00e6iske lande. Tallet er ogs\u00e5 lidt lavere end i Canada, som er relativt t\u00e6t p\u00e5 befolkningsst\u00f8rrelse og sk\u00f8nnes at have mellem 10-12 ICU senge per 100.000 indbyggere afh\u00e6ngig af metoden, der er brugt til beregningerne.\n\"\"\nHertil kommer en\n\n seneste model\u00f8velse\n<\/a>\nom stigningskapaciteten p\u00e5 australske intensivafdelinger, som blev offentliggjort i slutningen af marts i\n\n Medical Journal of Australia\n<\/a>\n, fandt ud af, at der var potentiale til n\u00e6sten at tredoble intensiv sengekapacitet som svar p\u00e5 forventet \u00f8get eftersp\u00f8rgsel efter Covid-19.<\/p>\n

If\u00f8lge unders\u00f8gelsen kunne australske ICU'er \u00f8ge antallet af ICU-senge med yderligere 4.261 (189%), hvis det er n\u00f8dvendigt. P\u00e5 det niveau ville der dog v\u00e6re mangel p\u00e5 ventilatorer og sandsynligvis ogs\u00e5 PPE-udstyr. Unders\u00f8gelsen estimerede, at ventilatorernes oversp\u00e6ndingspotentiale er lidt over 2.000, s\u00e5 det ville kun delvist opfylde den maksimale oversp\u00e6ndingskapacitet i form af senge.<\/p>\n

Et andet problem, der potentielt begr\u00e6nser kapaciteten, ville v\u00e6re den sundhedspersonale, der er n\u00f8dvendig for at betjene ventilatorerne. Modellerings\u00f8velsen viste, at der ved maksimal stigningskapacitet kunne kr\u00e6ves op til yderligere 4.000 overl\u00e6ger og 42.700 registrerede intensivsygeplejersker.<\/p>\n

Til dato er der stadig ledig kapacitet p\u00e5 de fleste australske hospitaler, mens mange lande i Europa med h\u00f8jere antal Covid-19-tilf\u00e6lde, s\u00e5som Italien, har v\u00e6ret under mere pres. Tiden vil vise, om denne situation vil vare, da vinters\u00e6sonen n\u00e6rmer sig, og en anden b\u00f8lge af sager er mulig.<\/p>\n

Det er vanskeligt at lave retf\u00e6rdige internationale sammenligninger, da landene har forskellige sundhedssystemer og forskellige m\u00e5der at indsamle statistik p\u00e5, og det skal bem\u00e6rkes, at p\u00e5lideligheden i de rapporterede ICU-senge varierer fra land til land, ligesom alderen p\u00e5 dataene og de metoder, der anvendes til beregninger, g\u00f8r. Ikke desto mindre giver tallene grundlag for en generel sammenligning.<\/p>\n

N\u00e5r f\u00f8rst pandemien er forbi, eller vi i det mindste ser en tilbagevenden til nogle niveauer af normalitet, vil det v\u00e6re interessant at se, hvilken effekt den nuv\u00e6rende krise vil have p\u00e5 l\u00e6ngere sigt p\u00e5 antallet af intensive senge p\u00e5 verdensplan.
