Birmingham Children's Hospital receives 'Outstanding' rating

< Back to news
Staff at Birmingham Children's Hospital are celebrating the award of an 'Outstanding' rating by the Care Quality Commission.

The hospital, now part of Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, is the only children's hospital of its type in the country to receive an 'Outstanding' rating in the relevant category.

Visiting in May 2016, inspectors looked at the following core services: A&E, medical care, surgery, paediatric critical care, neonatal care, transition services, end of life care, outpatients and child and adolescent mental health services.

The trust scored as 'outstanding' for whether its services were caring, effective and responsive and 'good' for whether its services had good leadership

The Trust's Chief Executive, Sarah-Jane Marsh, is happy that the CQC has recognised the work of the specialist paediatric hospital. She attributes the hospital's success to its focus on teamwork, as well as the way the hospital supports innovation. A child patient sits in a ward recovery unit in a mobile hospital at Outstanding rating provider Birmingham Children's Hospital has had a Q-bital Visiting Hospital at its site since March 2015. It has provided the Trust with additional clinical capacity primarily in plastic surgery, but across other specialities too.

The unit integrates with the hospital's existing buildings using a bespoke link corridor. It does however have the ability to act as a standalone treatment and recovery centre for day-case patients. With an eight bed ward and a top-quality operating room, the hospital has ensured valuable additional day case capacity.

Steve Clayton, Clinical Contracts Manager at Q-bital Healthcare, who has worked closely with the Trust on the unit, commented:

"We are very proud of the successful partnership with Birmingham Children's Hospital. It is an outstanding organisation with a reputation for delivering first-rate paediatric care. The exceptional care delivered over the last two years speaks for itself. We are all delighted that the Trust's exceptional healthcare delivery has been recognised with an outstanding rating by CQC."
