Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd door de University of Otago, Adapt Research en Tairawhiti District Health Board. Cataract zorgt ervoor dat de natuurlijke lens van het oog troebel wordt, wat zorgt voor wazig, wazig of minder kleurrijk zicht.<\/p>\n

Onderzoek toont aan dat mensen met staar twee keer zoveel kans hebben om te vallen en daardoor extra druk op het zorgsysteem leggen, en mogelijk ook depressief en ge\u00efsoleerd raken. De onderzoeker, de heer Boyd, zei:<\/p>\n

\u201cHet probleem van staar zal alleen maar toenemen naarmate de bevolking ouder wordt. Wereldwijd worden er elk jaar 27 miljoen staaroperaties uitgevoerd, waarmee het de meest uitgevoerde procedure ter wereld is.\u201d<\/p>\n
