Behovet<\/h3>\n

Vid Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust<\/a>, hade en betydande eftersl\u00e4pning av patienter som beh\u00f6ver operation f\u00f6r gr\u00e5 starr p\u00e5skyndats av covid-19-pandemin. Nationellt m\u00f6ter m\u00e5nga patienter v\u00e4ntetider \u00f6ver ett \u00e5r och efterfr\u00e5gan f\u00f6rutsp\u00e5s \u00f6ka med 50% under de kommande 20 \u00e5ren. The Trust at Newcastle tillhandah\u00e5ller katarakttj\u00e4nster till stora delar av nord\u00f6stra England och letade efter en l\u00f6sning som kunde hj\u00e4lpa till att \u00f6ka antalet ingrepp de kunde utf\u00f6ra och f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra kvaliteten p\u00e5 patientupplevelsen.<\/p>\n

Planen<\/h3>\n

I samarbete med Vanguard Healthcare Solutions unders\u00f6kte stiftelsen m\u00e5nga alternativ innan de valde en modul\u00e4r design f\u00f6r sitt nya kataraktcenter. Planen var att bygga ett komplex som skulle inkludera tre behandlingsrum och som skulle placeras p\u00e5 Campus for Ageing and Vitality. Planen var att anv\u00e4nda ett omr\u00e5de av stiftelsens fastighet d\u00e4r det tidigare l\u00e5g en byggnad som hade fallit ur bruk och rivits.<\/p>\n

Planen var att designa ett komplex som f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttrade patientfl\u00f6det. Detta inkluderade utvecklingen av ett enkelriktat system f\u00f6r patienter som gjorde deras resa s\u00e5 smidig som m\u00f6jligt.<\/p>\n

Vanguard-l\u00f6sningen<\/h3>\n

Vanguard arbetade tillsammans med klinisk och annan personal p\u00e5 Trust-avdelningen som var djupt involverade i designprocessen, vilket inkluderade veckom\u00f6ten f\u00f6r att s\u00e4kerst\u00e4lla att utrymmet var optimalt f\u00f6r deras specifika syfte.<\/p>\n

Detta samarbete ledde till skapandet av ett komplex med tre operationssalar som utformades f\u00f6r att utf\u00f6ra upp till 1 000 kataraktoperationer per m\u00e5nad. Vid sidan av de tre operationssalarna finns det ocks\u00e5 tv\u00e5 h\u00e4lsoomr\u00e5den f\u00f6r personalen f\u00f6r att underl\u00e4tta social distansering, samt f\u00f6rr\u00e5d och tv\u00e4ttstugor.<\/p>\n

Designarbetet p\u00e5b\u00f6rjades i oktober 2020 och installationen p\u00e5b\u00f6rjades i b\u00f6rjan av december 2020. Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre \u00f6ppnade officiellt den 6 april 2021, en total handl\u00e4ggningstid p\u00e5 7\u20138 m\u00e5nader fr\u00e5n koncept till \u00f6ppnandet av en treoperationsanl\u00e4ggning i drift. Processen f\u00f6rsenades n\u00e5got av den tredje nedst\u00e4ngningen och juluppeh\u00e5llet. Anl\u00e4ggningen installerades p\u00e5 bara fyra m\u00e5nader, en betydligt kortare tid \u00e4n vad som skulle f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntas f\u00f6r en traditionell byggnad.<\/p>\n

Byggnadens design och patientfl\u00f6de var nyckeln. Patienterna f\u00f6rbed\u00f6ms innan de bokas f\u00f6r ingreppet, och de som anses ha h\u00f6gre risk behandlas i huvudsjukhuset.<\/p>\n

Patienterna kommer in p\u00e5 centret p\u00e5 byggnadens s\u00f6dra sida till ett mottagningsrum, checkas in av en utsedd sjuksk\u00f6terska som stannar hos dem under hela resan, g\u00e5r sedan genom byggnaden till en mottagning innan de tas till operationssalen f\u00f6r sin procedur. De tas sedan till ett uppvakningsrum, d\u00e4r de f\u00e5r en genomg\u00e5ng av efterv\u00e5rden av sjuksk\u00f6terskan, innan de g\u00e5r ut genom byggnadens norra sida till det avsedda upph\u00e4mtningsomr\u00e5det utanf\u00f6r.<\/p>\n

Resultatet<\/h3>\n

Det f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttrade patientfl\u00f6det har gjort att den genomsnittliga tiden som spenderas i anl\u00e4ggningen minskat fr\u00e5n 3\u20134 timmar till mellan 45 minuter och 1 timme. Enheten utf\u00f6r upp till 1000 gr\u00e5starrsingrepp per m\u00e5nad. Trust har f\u00e5tt en stor m\u00e4ngd positiv feedback fr\u00e5n patienter och deras familjer samt personal som arbetar i byggnaden. En av matronerna som hade varit involverad under hela projektet framh\u00f6ll att hon hade sett personalen "blomstra" i den nya byggnaden.<\/p>\n
